Teeth cleanings are a key component to good oral health. The mouth is a window into the rest of our body. Did you know poor oral health could lead to a variety of dental and medical problems including gum disease and infection, bone loss, and even heart disease? Regular dental check-ups and cleanings can prevent problems like these from occurring.
We recommend having your teeth professionally cleaned at least twice a year in order to maintain optimal oral health.
Regular dental check-ups, or oral exams, are an essential part of maintaining good oral health. Our professional dental cleanings include:
Tartar (calculus) removal: When plaque is left on the tooth for some time, it hardens and attaches itself firmly to the tooth’s surface. This hardened substance is called calculus; it forms both above and below the gum line and can only be removed with professional dental instruments.
Plaque removal: Plaque is a colorless, nearly invisible, soft, sticky substance that continually forms on our teeth and gums. It produces toxins that can contribute to tooth decay and gum disease, and so needs to be removed regularly.
Teeth polishing: Helps to remove stains and plaque that are not removed during your regular home care routine. Teeth polishing will leave your teeth smooth and shiny.
Individualized instruction for every day care: Our goal is to give all of our patient’s the best care possible by working as a team with them. We educate our patient’s on how to maintain the essential at-home routine with visual aids and easy to follow take-home instructions.
Dental Radiographs: Are taken to help reveal tooth fracture, dental decay, cysts or abscess and other pathology. They are also helpful to determine bone level and amount of bone loss, which helps to detect periodontal disease. Our office takes Bite-wing X-rays once a year at your check-up and additional one’s when seems necessary. Dental X-rays are considered safe and the staff at Dr. Peter McDonald’s takes all the necessary precautions to limit your exposure to radiation.
Oral cancer screening: This is an examination of your face, lips, neck, throat, tongue, gums and tissues for any sign of oral cancer.
Gum disease exam: A gum disease exam is performed to evaluate your gums and bones that surround your teeth for any signs of periodontal disease.
Tooth decay exam: All of the surfaces of your teeth will be checked for tooth decay with special dental tools.
Exams of existing restorations: All of your existing fillings and crowns will be evaluated.
Occlusion analysis: This is a bite-analysis evaluation for any issues, such as TMJ.
At the end your professional dental cleaning with the hygienist the doctor will see you for an exam. We will take the time to talk to you about your personal oral hygiene and make sure all of your questions are answered and you are satisfied with the services provided at your visit.
